"We're All in the Boat"

3/5/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

We're all in the boat
Drifting on the sea
Trying to stay afloat
water as far as the eye can see

So reach into your heart
find a hopeful word
find a healing gesture
and send it off like a bird

Then keep your eyes on the horizon
One day she'll return
To lead this fragile vessel
safely home

~Chorus from "We're All in the Boat", by Tom Walker

It thrills my aching heart to see how the world is uniting to bring aid to Haiti and  Chile.  But aside from money, how can I, one person, help a country far away? and warring peoples and homeless neighbors in what can feel like a big black hole of need?

Well, I am an artist.  I might not be the best politician, or a builder of new houses, but inspiration pours through me to manifest art and the unique life I create.  It manifests in the loving way I behold a stranger; in the family-oriented film we're creating together; and most of all, in the ways I nourish my own spirit, that I may have the abundance to overflow upon our beautiful world.

I believe that the most effective way for each of us to aid our planet and its people is found in the secret whisperings of our hearts.  That, even when there does not appear to be a direct connection from one to the other, everything we do to bring love into the world Does somehow uplift our global community.

How does your soulfire burn?
That's what ConnectedFilm is about, and YOU are an essential part of it.  When the film is completed with your help, we'll be making a web platform for you to share your SoulFire projects with the world.

Vibes for your SoulFire,

The Evolution of Connection

2/26/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

The Evolution of Connection, my friends!  You are the first to hear about my latest incarnation of connecting to the world through live art and interaction.

Last January, hundreds of people all over the world tuned in to my live variety show.  I loved chatting with you during the Q&A, but I wanted a way to interact with you In-Depth, and Vokle provided the next step.

I'm calling it a Live Interactive Vlog Experience -Amy Walker "LIVE"Each week, I will release an exclusive video from my recent show, which you can download.

On Saturdays in March, I will open up my heart and home for those who are interested in discussing the video and my work in-depth.  You can simply watch the video feed, or register for a free account with Vokle to submit your questions during the Q&Amy.

For the full interactive experience, you can even set up your webcam and mic through Vokle and submit Video questions.  If your question is chosen, you will appear live on video feed with me so we can be even more Connected!

Also each week, I will share a new piece for you, like a Vlog.  It may be a song, monologue, character writing, something from my own journal...  Whatever I'm inspired to share.

I actually had a dream last summer that we were doing live vlogs over the net for ConnectedFilm.  We had a 3-camera set up, complete with a live audience and a crew that fed us questions people sent in -all housed in a school gym!

It may have been my subconscious at work, but who knows where this new technology will take us!

"We Are More"

2/19/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

What a JOY to see so many of the world's nations
gathering together to celebrate the evolution of athletic achievement.  The rivers of color-drenched flags and shimmering faces at the Opening Ceremonies represented, to me,
the strength of our differences.

And although I Thrilled at the spectacular effects of gigantic glittering star constellations, areal ski-acrobatics and spark-shooting tap dancers, it was the echoing, tap-rooted, star-shaking power of one man's voice that had me sobbing in streams of un-hyperbolized awe.

"We are an experiment going right, for a change," he said.
"We are an idea in the process of being realized
We are young, we are cultures strung together then woven into a tapestry
And the design is what makes us more than the sum totals of our history...

We dream so big that there are those
Who would call our ambition an industry...

We are the abandoned hesitation of all those who can't wait...

Because we are choices
We are millions upon millions of voices
Shouting, "Keep exploring!"...

Each life unravels differently
And experiences are what make up
The colours of our tapestry

We are the true North
Strong and free
And what's more
Is that we didn't just say it
We made it be"

~excerpts from Canadian Shane Koyczan's poem, "We Are More,"
as delivered at the 2010 Olympic Games.

"We are more" because We Are Connected.

Happy Valentine's Day!

2/11/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

Happy:

Valentinsdag
(Denmark/Norway)
Dydd Santes Dwynwen
(Wales)
Saint Valentin
(France)

Dia dos Namorados ("Day of the Enamored" in Portugal and Brazil)
San Valentín
(Spain)
Alla hjärdans dag
("All Hearts' Day" in Sweden)

Ystänänpäivä ("Friend's Day" in Finland)
Sõbrapäev

情人节 or 情人節
(China; and "White Day" next month)
Araw ng mga Puso ("Hearts' Day" in the Philippines)
Sepandarmazgan or Esfandegan
(traditional celebration of love, friendship, and Earth in Iran)

Valentine's Day!
(... or perhaps we should call it Valentines' Day? the Day of Cards 'n' Stuff!)

According to Wikipedia, there is no unified version of how a handful of chaste Roman Saints named Valentino, a bunch of kings and courtiers who liked... well, Courting, and Lepurcalia, an archaic rite of fertility, have somehow simmered into the steamy love stew we now serve each other on February 14th.

Personally, I like the Slovenian proverb: "St Valentine brings the keys of roots," which makes flowers and plants start to grow.  "The keys of roots."  I Love that!

So However you connect to those you love this weekend, whether it's nearly Spring or almost Autumn; a time to celebrate, or a time to love and be grateful in small, quiet ways, we wish you Joy and Connection to your family and friends.

a Global Zeitgeist

2/5/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

Well, my friends, we are certainly part of a global movement!  A year and a half ago, before ConnectedFilm.com existed, Sander, Marilee and I dreamed of creating SoulFireProject.org: a website where anyone can create a page about a project they're burning to manifest.

Their projects would gain awareness and funding in a similar way to the ConnectedFilm project -through micro-donations from many people who believe in the project and want to contribute.

As you know, the SoulFire Project is still our eventual goal,
and will be kick-started by proceeds from the film Connected, after it's released.  Sort of a "Here's what worked for us; now it's your turn!" idea.  We imagine helping people who want to build a well in Zimbabwe, or make quilts for cancer patients, start a community garden, or fund a film!

This week, CF liaison, Lisa Gallant, found a website so similar to SFP in its goals, that we must all be tapping the same universal wellspring.
This gives me Great Faith that, as the old capitalistic structures of our economy crumble, together, we are weaving a new web of deep connection around the world.  One sprouting up from a fertile foundation of community, generosity, and soulfire!

Connecting Across The World

1/28/2010

Six continents.  49 countries.  Over 730 households.  Those of you who attended Amy Walker LIVE: the Real Amy, last Saturday, had the opportunity to connect to people all over the world.

We sang, laughed, chatted, explored.  I shared pieces spanning a spectrum of the "real me", and you asked wonderful questions that kept me buzzing for days.

But my favorite part was when we sent Vibes to Haiti together, expanding that to Afghanistan, Iraq, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, Australasia, South America, North America, the oceans, the entire world.

The power and quality of that positive energy we created together was palpable and utterly inspiring.  What a way to connect!

So THANK YOU ALL.  Whether you were "there" or not, you were represented; called in and connected.

Many of you are featured in this week's blog video!

Connecting through the Basics

1/20/2010

Food, clothing, and art.  In light of the continuing work of recovery and reconstruction in Haiti, and many places around the world, we're focusing on connecting through the basics.

Through Prima Jiva clothing design, you can support children in Kenya and Afghanistan. http://www.primajiva.com

CF liaison, Sharon Beck, connects through food.  This week, she's sharing her recipe for Financiers in a charming cooking video -Part 2 of 3 in her Financier series.  (link below)

And together we can celebrate Art and connect LIVE at Amy's all new show: The REAL Amy Walker, on Saturday the 23rd at 1:00 PST/4:00 EST/9:00 GMT.  http://www.AmyWalkerLIVE.com

10% of all donations to the show will benefit the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund.

Financiers for ConnectedFilm

1/16/2010

a letter from Co-Founder Amy Walker:

When we'd first finished the script for Connected, SoulFire Films sought "the usual road" to the silver screen.  We contacted the exec producer of a production company we had ties with, in hopes that they'd join with us to bring the film to life.

During the courtship dance, in which the economic viability of the film was professionally tested and pronounced "Green-Light Go!", we wondered whether the company's true aim resonated with our own, or with the cha-ching of the cash register.

We wanted to ensure that this film was "of the People, by the People, and for the People", rather than "of the Pretty People who Blow Things Up, by the Big Important People Who Say So, for the Demographic of People Who'll Fork Over the Most Cash".

We founded the ConnectedFilm project so that we could stick to our ideals and produce the most purely, universally Human version of this film possible.

We choose to do that by connecting with You.  By opening up a dialogue about what it means to be a community in this day and age.  A family.

Does it mean jumping on Facebook and reconnecting with people I used to go to school with?  Walking in an old-growth forest with my family and appreciating that we still have trees?  Using my cell phone to call my Grandfather who can no longer see photos and emails, but he can still hear my voice?

Sharon Beck, one of our newest Liaisons, likes to connect through food.  She's using her skills and passions to create a wonderful kind of Financier -and they're YUMMY!  (more about her blog video below)

This week, I've been inspired by the Wikimedia Foundation, whose values are so similar to ours that it made my heart Fly.  (see the Zeitgeist section below.)

What does it mean to you?  How do you manifest connection in your world?

Vibes for your SoulFire,

HAPPY TWENTY-TEN!

In celebration of the new year, we've released the "We Are Connected" music video!

Abundant thanks to everyone involved, particularly Mike Shafer, our videographer and editor extraordinaire and the hard-working crew members on those group shoots.

And to everyone who uploaded a photo or video! You really added to the global feeling of the project and the song's message.  We wanted to cram every photo in there, but we just couldn't make them all fit, so we'll be making a special follow-up blog featuring the other wonderful and creative pieces.

Have a joyous and Inspirational New Year!

Happy Holidays

12/18/2009

HAPPIEST OF HOLIDAYS TO YOU!

We are joyously grateful to each and every one of you.  This project is becoming so much more than we could have dreamed.

This week, we welcome three new CF Liaisons:
Sharon Beck and Istvan Sonkoly in San Francisco, CA, (and, remotely, Hungary!) and Tim Harman in Brighton, England!

As with all of our liaisons, they'll be utilizing their unique talents and interests to help us connect to even more people around the world.  We're excited for their contributions through our blog, newsletter, and beyond.

Special thanks to our Web Development Team, Colin Mackie and Mike Scullion!  Most of their work is "invisible" to the public, but we couldn't function without their wonderful help, and they've greatly surpassed our dreams in many ways.  I never knew a database could be so beautiful!

We've added a FAQs page, and the names of our CF Community are scrolling by in random order, so you'll be more likely to see your name when you pop by for blog updates!

Since our film, Connected, centers around a gathering of the Russel family, and how they keep in touch with those present and absent, it may be interesting to take a step back during your holiday gatherings and see how many different forms of communication and technology you use to keep in touch -and which forms mean the most to you and others.

No matter what you celebrate, be it holiday, solstice, or the joy found in each day of living, may this time of transition be at once healing, renewing, and inspiring for you and your loved ones.  We'll see you in the new year!

What are YOU most thankful for?

12/3/2009

Seattle made national news this past week for all the wrong reasons. Without raking through the details again, four police officers lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. This came just weeks after a similar incident on Halloween night.
After the rage dies down and the collective tears of a frightened community fall, we're left to ponder our next move. I think everybody feels a deep sense of confusion and helplessness when such violence is committed without any provocation. How can we stop it? What if it had been somebody I know? Why is this happening?

Have you ever felt invisible? All I can think about is what we can do as a society, a nation, a city, a neighborhood, to keep people from getting to a place where they have no regard for humanity. It seems like an insurmountable task... some even say impossible, but I disagree.

I've seen throughout my life, and even more so since starting the ConnectedFilm project, that it really only takes one person to make a huge difference. One person saying or doing just the right thing at the right time to completely change the course of events. Not everybody believes in tipping points or the butterfly effect, but I can't lose hope that if we keep trying to make those Connections instead of turning our backs, that we can change the world for the better.

All our hearts go out the families of those taken, and to the law enforcement officers everywhere who risk their lives so that we can all feel safe. I hope everybody gets a moment to watch Alex's video on our blog this week. It couldn't be a more appropriate time to take a minute and think about those things for which we're thankful.

Thank You!

11/21/2009

Abundant thanks to all who connected at my live interactive show on Saturday! What a Trip! It was so incredible sharing the experience with people from all over the world.

I will be posting pieces of it on YouTube, which I captured on a second camera set up behind the live feed webcam. The show in its entirety will only ever be seen by those who were there, but don't worry:

I've had loads of ideas for new live interactive shows in the coming year, so you'll get your chance to connect to the world and experience all new material in this fun and dynamic way.

As ever, ConnectedFilm members will be the first to know about the details. One idea I've had is to start at the beginning of the screenplay for Connected and read one scene at each show (those would not be published to YouTube). Would that interest you?

Have a Beautiful Thanksgiving! Wherever in the world you are, we are grateful to each and every one of you. You're all essential to this project of connecting to a million people all over the world to bring this film to life!

I hope you can take time to connect with your family this holiday season. That's what this film -and the project! is all about. In fact, we're celebrating my Grandma's 80th birthday tomorrow -just like the characters in the film!

HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY, VIRGINIA HOUSER!

You truly embody the powerful potency of connecting from the heart.

When do you feel most Connected?

10/10/2009

When do you feel the most connected? Be it talking to your friends online,
or perhaps engaging in a one on one conversation with your family, we all
have different ways of feeling connected. This short film by Connected
Liaison Alex Schaefer demonstrates the power a single question has on a
group of people. Are YOU connected?

Connected Moment Memory from Co-Founder, Sander Kallshian:

After this happened I wanted to write it down, but I immediately thought it sounded unbelievable just due to the gravity of the coincidence... or was it?

We were heading to dinner at the best local Pho restaurant, famous for their complementary homemade cream puffs and also for the fact that they only accept cash. Naturally, as citizens of a Plastic Nation, we had to stop by an ATM before we went to the restaurant, so we pulled up into a temporary parking spot (some people refer to these as "sidewalks") and I jumped out to withdraw some coveted green goodness.

As I rounded the corner toward the ATM, there were two homeless men sitting by an out-of-order phone booth. One was selling some random items and the other held a guitar that was silent at the time. I was in a hurry, but I always make a point to look homeless people in the eye. For me, the thought of feeling invisible is not something that anybody should endure.

He asked me if I had eighty-two cents to spare so he could buy a burger, which I assumed was legitimate because he was across the street from Dick's Drive-In, well-known for its deliciously cheap American fare. Being somebody that quite literally never carries change in his pocket, I said I was sorry and shuffled right along.

I always feel very strange approaching an ATM or going into a restaurant right after turning down a request for spare change, but there seems to be a relentless, almost necessary disconnect between the two activities. I suppose it's the whole idea of "picking your battles" when it comes to where you are going to spend your money. I am a contributing member of several organizations, and I take pride in putting my money where my mouth is. Sometimes my mouth is on a social justice soapbox, and other times it's on a steaming hot bowl of cure-all Vietnamese soup. But I digress...

As I pulled the wallet from my back pocket I heard a noise that rarely escapes my pants. It was the sound of loose change, and I had a brief sinking feeling in my stomach at the thought that not only did I lie to the music-less man, but that I was going to have to pass him again on my return and face unbearable scorn if he recognized me from my first response. I put my hand in my pocket and resigned to just giving the change to him with the true story included that I had forgotten I was carrying coins the first time around.

I opened my palm and took a look at my collection to make sure the amount wasn't insultingly useless. For no particular reason I tend to resist donating less than fifty cents. It took only a few seconds for me to become suspicious... for in my hand sat three quarters, a nickel and two pennies. I immediately looked up and started looking around with a slight smile. Where's the camera? Where are the people that just magically became aware of my realization so they could have a good chuckle with me. No cameras, no comrades... just me, and the money, and the out-of-place smile on my face.

Well... that settled it. Now I was not only celestially obligated to give the man his change, but I also felt the need to share with him the bond we shared unbeknownst to him. I came back and asked "Hi... uh... how much did you ask me for just a minute ago?" He said "eighty-two cents, but of course anything you got would be helpful."

I held out my hand and said "This is strange, but I found exactly eighty-two cents in my pocket, and I never carry change... so considering the fact that you knew more about the contents of my pocket then I did I figure either
(1) My jeans are entirely too tight or
(2) this money is actually yours and I apologize for keeping it from you.

He looked at me the way my grandmother does when I've spoken a bit too fast for her to understand, but his reply was not geriatric in the least. "You've kept me alive for another 10 hours buddy," he said. It was one of our last warm days and all I could think to say in return was "Carpe noctem!"

As I got back in the car. I felt like my life was being TiVo'd, and I felt connected. Not just to the stranger and the moment, but to the Universe, just for a minute.

The ConnectedFilm Team

Chance Encounters and Boston Connections

9/19/2009

Lisa, a Boston Liaison for the ConnectedFilm project, takes you on a whirlwind tour of Beantown while spreading the word that 'We Are Connected."

On a personal note:

I've been taking more time lately for those chance encounters that happen in unlikely places.  A spark that ignites in the harried hive of the Post Office, for example.  We're all "busy" -things to do and a tight schedule to keep.  But the other day, a relatively unknown couple and I allowed the spark to ignite into what became an impassioned discussion about the joyous mysteries that blossom before us; even the thorny ones.

We spent nearly an hour talking in that tiny box of a P.O. waiting room.  People buzzed about as our voices rose and fell in harmonic rhythms of thought -from Batman to public school to sudden journeys into the unknown, flowering out of what could be considered "bad news".

What if I take more time for those sparks when they occur?  Am I afraid my Important Day would be consumed by what might become a beautiful connection with someone I may never meet again?

The ConnectedFilm project is as much about connecting to people as it is about making the film.  It's an exploration into how we connect as humans in this crazyamazing world of ours.

So if you have a short memory of a time when you allowed a random spark to ignite the unexpected, email us about it and we'll feature it in our next flier.
